Herbert von Karajan played this repertoire for most of his life. This lovingly remastered collection, recorded in 1969 at the Jesus Christ Church in Berlin, is a perfect example of his artistry. Everything sparkles, radiates, and shimmers. Above all, the wonderful interpretation of the Sounds of the Spheres reveals their longing for wholeness, tempered by transience, melting even stones.
The musicians of the Berlin Philharmonic give voice to the Egyptian March – even from here, one can sense Karajan's joy for his heritage. The delicate pizzicato polka can compete with any arabesque. The Tales from the Vienna Woods, with its unique zither solo, best demonstrates the picturesque art of the Strauss family in celebrating waltzes. Interspersed with marches and polkas… a successful compilation of the genre.
